/ observations . . .

“To be a graphic designer in a country that is still so wide-open (we’re talking about NZ here) must be exciting. In the Netherlands, design culture is very dominant. We like it that way, we’re not complaining, but what we mean is this: as a design group, we know that our influence on Dutch design culture will be minimal ... As a young designer, you have the possibility to really change national design culture, to have a voice. Young designers, such as David Bennewith and the guys behind The National Grid, are really shaping the image of NZ design. There are scenes to create, standards to be set. Young NZ designers have a world to win. That’s something really special.” / From an interview with Experimental Jetset, by Joanna Alpe & Livia Lima, We Love, for Cheese on Toast /// more news >>

Experimenta (Elaina Hamilton and Duncan Forbes) started in 2007, and have quickly become noticed for their bold typographic style. Though only having been designing for a short time they have managed to impress their style around Wellington for the Adam Art Gallery, Massey School of Fine Arts, The New Zealand Film Archive, Hue & Cry Journal and are now venturing into the fashion realm with designer Lela Jacobs.

Within two years of starting up, Experimenta duo, Elaina Hamilton and Duncan Forbes have built up a portfolio around their style, which is becoming more sophisticated with each project. By February ‘09 Experimenta will have completed most of the rebranding of the Adam Art Gallery, fashion label Lela Jacobs  latest collection ‘Small Victories’ as well as successful projects for the New Zealand Film Archive and the new arts journal ‘Hue & Cry’. Experimenta will discuss 4–5 projects with the emphasis on the development of their style, as well as starting up a very small design business in Wellington, designing for mainly art clients with minimal budgets.
